Hello and I trust you are all looking forward to Spring as much as I am!

Things have been very busy at our practice so far this year, and they don't look like letting up.

We are particularly excited to have become the official dentists to the Collingwood Football Club. This is indeed an important milestone for us as avid sports supporters. Make sure you keep your eyes peeled for players around the practice.

We recently opened our high-tech Orthodontic Centre in the awe-inspiring tower of the Manchester Unity Building, where patients can enjoy panoramic views of Melbourne while having their smiles attended to by our specialist orthodontists.

The Smile Solutions Tooth Fairy has also been busy. Read on for pictures and to find out what the Tooth Fairy has been up to!

As usual, this edition of Smile Talk is packed with goodies. You'll find an amazing special offer, information about the practice, handy and interesting dental advice and some fun dental tips to inspire your kids to look after their teeth.

Smile Solutions Awards
In July we were very proud to win - for the second year running - the Australian Business Award for Service Excellence in our industry. The award recognises our uniqueness in providing, under the one roof in tandem with general dentistry, the services of registered specialists in all fields of dentistry.

This year we also won the Australian Business Award for innovation in dentistry, recognising our achievement in matchmaking an historic architectural icon on the one hand and contemporary technological sophistication on the other. Our goal in building a dental practice that marries form with function in an unprecedented way is to offer our dental patients the best and most appealing service possible - in terms of comfort and convenience for the patient, technical excellence, clinical outcome, and cost.

Why not take a virtual tour of our award winning, technologically sophisticated practice by clicking the video below.

Recently our Tooth Fairy brought some joy to young patients at the Monash Children's Hospital in Clayton. After performing her educational show, the Tooth Fairy was lucky enough to meet and have photos taken with these precious children who have been so unwell. She brought smiles to their faces and everyone received special gift bags.

Even though he was not feeling too well, Jok, aged 6, showed the Tooth Fairy his bright smile and sparkling white teeth.

Your (dental) destiny is in the tea leaves

Black Tea

Did you know that drinking three to four cups of tea a day can help keep the dentist away? A report in London's Daily Mail newspaper reveals scientific findings that the antioxidants in black tea can help combat two types of bacteria that are both associated with tooth decay and gum disease; and that green tea appears to have a similar effect, as well as helping to prevent bad breath by neutralising the sulphur compounds that contribute to it.

Click here to listen to Dr Kia Pajouhesh speak to 3AW's Denis Walter about the benefits of black tea.
The Manchester Unity Building lights up TV screens

Recently our Level 11 boardroom starred in an episode of Channel 9's The Block, when it became "The Block Boardroom" - where the five participating couples were issued with the challenge for, and received the final judgement on, their respective apartment makeovers of a Park Street, South Melbourne, apartment block.

The Manchester Unity tower, normally home to our premium orthodontic centre, was the hostage hideout for contestants Hillal and Sam in Season 6, episode 7, of Channel 7's The Mole until 2 hours and 48 minutes of "yes/no" answers to a series of 30-second questions by mobile phone lead fellow contestants to them - and a reward of $10,000.

Helpful Facts

Smiling Woman
  • The active teeth whitening ingredient in whitening tooth pastes is actually too incidental to have any visible bleaching effects. Also, these toothpastes rely on abrasive ingredients that will wear down the enamel of your teeth with prolonged use.
  • The top causes of tooth decay are consumption of soft drinks, sports drinks, sugary snacks and snacking in between meals.

Strange (but true) facts
  • The average human produces almost 25,000 litres of saliva in a lifetime, nearly enough to fill two swimming pools.
  • Tooth plaque is home to over 300 different species of bacteria.

Recent FAQ's from Smile Solutions Patients

Smile

Can gum disease affect my overall health?

Yes it can. Gum disease is a serious dental problem that has been strongly linked to heart disease and strokes.

When should my child's first dental check-up take place?

We advise parents to introduce their child to professional dental care from the age of two. This may include watching a parent have their teeth cleaned, or having their own baby teeth counted and polished with a soft brush.

Joking Around

Woman: Darling, your teeth remind me of the stars.
Man: Because they gleam and sparkle?
Woman: No, because they come out at night!

Get your teeth into these foods this spring
Seasonal food that will keep your teeth in check this spring

BerriesThere are plenty of foods that promote good oral health but why not try going seasonal this Spring. Seasonal foods are usually cheaper, yummier and fresher than foods that are out of season.

Our top fruit and veg picks for September to November are:
Pawpaw, berries, asparagus, mushrooms, beetroot and brussels sprouts.

Don't forget to include in your diet a good mix of dairy products like yoghurt and cheese. The calcium food in these foods will help you achieve strong teeth and bones.

And for the sake of your teeth and general good health, we recommend that you avoid juices, which are not only acidic but also lacking in valuable fibre. Try, instead, processing your favourite fruits or salad vegetables in a blender. That way, you'll get ALL of the valuable nutrients, not just some!

General Dentist

How long have you been part of the Smile Solutions team?

Almost four years.

What is the best part of being a general dentist?
You get exposure to numerous aspects of dentistry, which keeps it interesting. You also help a larger variety of patients to receive the correct dental care.

What are your particular interests in dentistry?
I practised as a Cerec trainer for a number of years and have carried out more than 7,000 Cerec restorations. Porcelain fillings such as Cerec are a superb alternative to conventional white resin fillings.

Why did you decide to work at Smile Solutions?
I share Smile Solutions' passion for dental excellence in patient care and workmanship. The practice has all aspects of dentistry under one roof, which improves communication and patient care. Also, Smile Solutions is at the cutting edge of dental technologies, giving the patients the best possible treatment - and this is obviously something I'm proud to be associated with.

Can you tell us something that patients don't already know about you?
I have a passion for design.
